Optional Excursion For those interested, an optional visit to the Hejaz Railway Museum is available. The museum showcases the history of the historic railway line that once connected Damascus with Mecca and Medina. It offers a fascinating insight into Islamic civilization under one roof and is considered one of Medina’s most important historical attractions. Established in 1998 and inaugurated by Prince Abdul Majeed Ibn Abdulaziz, the museum occupies the restored Hejaz Railway Station. The railway was built during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II and opened in 1908. It reduced the journey for pilgrims traveling from the Levant, Asia, and Anatolia to Medina from approximately 40 days by traditional means to just 5 days by train. The railway ceased operation after being destroyed during World War I in 1916. Later, the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities restored the station and transformed it into a historical and archaeological museum. The museum consists of 19 galleries presenting the history of Medina from pre-Islamic times to the modern era. Visitors can learn about Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), his wives and descendants, the Muhajirun and Ansar, and many other aspects of Islamic history. It also features seven exhibition halls displaying artifacts, as well as restored Hejaz Railway train cars, some of which have been converted into restaurants for visitors.
